Welcome to Alderney Week 2009 1-9 August “Around the World in Eight Days”
This official Alderney Week website has been created to keep you up to date with Alderney’s biggest and most fantastic annual event.
If you are in a party mood, make sure to head for the Channel Island of Alderney for Alderney Week, the island’s biggest annual carnival. Alderney Week – in a nutshell:
Alderney Week’s Cavalcade Day, one of the big highlights, always takes place on the first Monday of August, and always concludes with the dramatic torchlight procession the following Saturday night. But there are many more highlights throughout the week which draw visitors from near and far to this little island on the rock. In fact, the island’s 2,400-strong population almost doubles during that week and you’re strongly advised to book your accommodation well ahead of time.
The history of Alderney Week is fascinating and you can read all about it on this website. Alderney Week started well before the last war and, what was initially a village fayre, has since developed into a madcap extended week. Every year since then, the organisers come up with a new theme and new events.
And don’t forget to check the Newsflash page for the latest news bulletins. Thank you
We’ve the logo for this year’s Alderney Week theme : “Around the World in Eight Days” - designed by 10-year old Lucy Casado who won the under-18’s Design-a-Logo Competition and received her prize from Alderney Team member Lee Flewitt.
So, what’s going to happen from 1 to 9 August? For eight days, the little island of Alderney will become the centre of the universe where the people of all the continents come together for the most colourful parade and a truly multi-national festival.
Expect Chinese dragons, polar bears, Arabs, Egyptians, Red Indians, Eskimos, Africans, Australians, Mexicans, Bollywood stars, Sumo Wrestlers and Morris Dancers, Frenchmen, Italians and Russians, the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, the Statue of Liberty, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Orient Express, and much more…..In short Alderney will be the world’s melting pot where East meets West and North moves South.
The different continents will be hosting various days and events throughout the week, from the Cavalcade Day and the Man-powered Flight to the Gala Spectacular, the Daft Raft Race and a number of new happenings.
As to the 2009 programme, this has now been finalised and you can see the outlines on our website. The printed programme will be out by 20 July at £1.
Miss Alderney & Mister Alderney Alderney Week simply cannot start without Miss Alderney and her two Maids of Honour. And this year’s Miss Alderney 2009 is Hannah Cox, who will be 17 in July. Hannah who is one of Alderney’s most promising young chefs, was elected at Saturday night’s (23 May) Miss Alderney Disco. Her Maids of Honour are 24-year old Sarah Pepper (right), a postal clerk at the Alderney Post Office, and 18-year old Katie Le Poullain who studies in Guernsey.
And Mr. Alderney 2008, 22-year old Adam Barnes, was chosen on Friday 1 August . He walked away with an Oscar, a trophy, a bottle of champagne, a big bag of man’s cosmetics and instantly found himself surrounded by the island’s pretty girls. What more could a young man wish for??? Mr. Alderney 2009 will be elected on Saturday 1 August during the big party on the Butes.
Last year the island celebrated the 60th anniversary of Alderney Week. ITV Channel Television was here throughout the week and has just produced a DVD capturing all the magic moments, which you can buy online www.channelonline.tv or in Alderney Lloyds TSB, who sponsored the video, or the Alderney Tourist Information Centre. A separate video featuring the Magic Mystery Gala Spectacular has also been released. To order, click here

60 years of Island History through the Eyes of Miss Alderney 1948—2008 now a feature film Last year many of the former Miss Alderneys joined us at a special celebration cocktail party on Saturday 2 August to celebrate 60 years of beautiful girls. The event was recorded by the film company Centre Media whose executive producer Kent Walwin was able to extract some great memories and facts during his interviews with these lovely ladies. The film –now available in DVD format – tells the tale of Alderney Week and, in particular, the Miss Alderney competition, which started in 1948 after the islanders, who had been evacuated during World War II, were at last able to return to their beloved Alderney. The DVD is available for £4 from Alderney Week PO Box 138, Alderney GY9 3HF.
