And below is a report by ITV Channel Television’s Alderney reporter and cameraman Nigel Soane-Sands:

Daft Raft Races

Madcap nautical mayhem describes Alderney Week’s Daft Raft Races which were thoroughly enjoyed by around 1,000 enthusiastic onlookers at Braye Beach and Douglas Quay.

The aim of the rafters is to complete a 200-yard horseshoe-shaped course with absolutely no penalties – in sharp contrast to the Tour de France – for trying to scupper the opposition or resorting to any other kind of skulduggery.

The first race – for dastardly children – saw a magnificently eclectic flotilla of 20 craft, many reflecting the Hollywood theme of the week and, as an additional navigational hazard, having to cope with sideline sabotage by the RNLI.  “Snakes on a Raft” slithered home first just ahead of “Another Fine Mess” .

The adults race – involving some of the same vessels but with bigger crew members –attracted 23 wacky entries. “Snakes on a Raft” made it a double for the Patterson family finishing just ahead of the Bower family’s “The Black Pig”.

The third and final race – for survivors or races 1 and 2 – was won by Jonny Cash’s “Walk the Line” .

There were prizes for Most Original raft, Best Costumes and Best Construction etc. with the major prize for “Best Overall” going to the “Black Sack” created by the Clarke family.

And not least, the memorable Wooden Spoon was awarded to “Oceans 3” which might have finished higher up the placings if the crew members hadn’t attempted to take on the unscrupulous lifeboat.

The Gala Night “ A Night at  the Oscars” with numerous re-enacted scenes from famous Hollywood films, was described by members of the audience as “the  best and slickest yet” and was without doubt one of the biggest highlights of Alderney Week. (more details to follow)
