Day Five: Wednesday 6 August
Morning:
Teddy Bears Picnic – organised by the Alderney Wildlife Trust – took place in and around Essex Farm and Barrak Masters Lane and was as popular with the kids as with their parents who were all in for a big surprise.
The Great Alderney Week Fun Run - This event started with another big surprise: the warm-up to the race was conducted by no less than Diana Moran, the Green Goddess of television fame, and nobody wanted to miss out on the celeb training session, including the soldiers from the 30 Signals Regiment. And then they were off: 118 competitors of all ages took part in the event which encompassed several categories of races.
And the winners were: 2 Miles (10yrs and Under) Female: Astra and Cali Wright (joint); Male: James Wood 2 Miles (12yrs and Under) Female: Katie Spencer-Jones; Male: Darren Atkins 5K (18yrs and Under) Female: Martina Gosney; Male: Josh McCulloch 5K (18yrs +) Female- Rosie Evans; Male: Philip Atkins 10K (18yrs +) Female- Nikki Neal; Male: Tim Price
This event was sponsored by Charlotte Newton
Afternoon:
Sandcastle Competition The 400 or so people – young and not so young – on Braye Beach this afternoon for the ever popular Alderney Week Sandcastle Competition are happy testament that bucket and spade holiday-making is still very much alive and digging.
Sandcastlers were divided into 5 classes: the under 5’s who had just 30 minutes to impress the judges, 6 to 8 year olds with 45 minutes to sculpt, the 9 to 11’s with an hour from start to finish, 12 to 14 year olds with 90 minutes on the clock and, finally, the highly competitive groups and families class which had 2 hours to dig and sculpt for enviable golden glory. Even the soldiers from the 30 Signals were busy digging and sculpturing to produce a replica of the regiment’s crest.
With so much talent around, being a judge is a brave thing to do! Well, judge for yourself. And among those taking away the top prizes were the Harrissons as overall winners, the Sumner family in the Open class, and the Woods with their dragon as best family entry. A highly amusing big frog with the caption “Kiss Me” created by four enthusiastic teenagers Georgie Maler, Olivia Emmerson, Danielle Wright and Rosie Hulbert received a special mention. This year’s Sandcastle Competition was sponsored by Healthspan.
Evening:
Magical Mystery Spectacular Gala Night on The Butes This is one of the biggest highlights of Alderney Week which kicked off with musical entertainment by the Alderney Blowers, in weird and magical outfits, setting the scene for a great night ahead.
If you’ve never seen an Alderney Week Wednesday Night Gala Spectacular – here’s what to expect: Firstly, it’s important to remember that this is all home-grown talent performing on stage. The script is also home-grown, produced by the terrific trio: Ronnie Cairnduff, Lee Flewitt and Alex Birch.
Emphasis is on entertainment and fun and the first and last rehearsal for most acts is usually that day, around 2.00pm when the producers are still busy recruiting volunteers for the cast. The Alderney Blowers who provide the music to the show, get very little time to rehearse. Then just hope you don’t forget your lines but if you do, the audience will just love it. In fact, one gets the distinct feeling that, if the show were without any hiccups, the audience would be extremely disappointed. And that’s amateur entertainment at its very best. This year was no exception, in fact this year the show was absolutely brilliant, with plenty of magic tricks (some going wrong, of course), mystery and magic. And every magician of name and fame was there to spellbind the audience, from Paul and Debbie Daniel, Tommy Cooper, and Parry Hotter to the Wizard of Oz.
The show kicked off with 6 magicians, and if their spells didn’t do the trick, the “Scary Godmothers” managed to cast a spell or two. This was followed by “Lee-o-tard”, an illusion act. Just slightly more serious and very moving was the Makaton performance by a large group of children who interpreted the tear-choking song “You’ll never walk alone” in sign language. Then it was back to a mind-blowing mind-reading act of the Great Sandorio and his glamourous assistant Debbie, bearing a cunning resemblance to Paul Daniel and his wife Debbie. A polished performance, but not without a few hiccups which had the audience in stitches.
Carrot-munching bunnies hopping in and out of hats. And the ventriloquist who seemed to have forgotten most of his script had to rely on the cuddly shaggy dog on the end of his hand to keep feeding him the lines he couldn’t remember. Hilarious. Needless to say, the audience just loved it.
The children’s favourite TV programme “Magic Roundabout” raised roars from the public. The next illusion act had the WOW factor and “That Ole Black Magic” song performance was well timed, just before Tommy Cooper had a few more tricks up his sleeve – “just like that!”…..one of the funniest performances of the evening.
Then witches and wizards took to the stage. Witch Alex demonstrated defying gravity and the love potion witches were brewing up a rather special cocktail. The Wizard of Oz act was totally enchanting as the very talented Rosie Evans literally made a rainbow appear as she sang that famous “Somewhere over the Rainbow” song. More Wizard of Oz magic and then that famous drumming Cadbury’s Gorilla did his number. No guesses who was hiding behind the mask.
A clever Clown Dance was performed by Cameron Cairnduff, Mike Tinby and Jack Williams and then there was that amazing waistcoat illusion trick performed by Leslie and Ronnie Cairnduff. How did they do this? Nobody will ever know. And not a single hiccup.
And then Cameron Cairnduff, Mike Tinby and Jack Willilams were back with the most amazing acrobatic routine involving – a ladder! Don’t try this at home but we might not have heard or seen the last of Fuzzy Logic, which is the stage name of the group. And when you see them next – in the press or perhaps on TV - remember you’ve seen them here first!
Hosts and compères of the Gala Night were Andrée Gaydon and Robin Whicker whose slick presentations, running commentaries and humorous, tongue-in-cheek introductions to the many acts really set the ambiance for an evening of fun and laughter. What a night of Pure Magic.
So, if you’ve missed it or want to see it again – we’re about to produce a DVD of the night which will be on sale shortly. Check out the website Newsflash.
