Race against the Train - Results: 81 runners competed in the inaugural "Race the Train" event during Alderney Week 2011. Children started at 09:55 and adults at 10:00 at Braye Railway Station. The train whistle blew and it was full steam ahead for two frantic miles to Mannez Quarry trying to outrun the train. Most participants managed to beat the train. The winner of the children's race was Jamie Blackham in 13mins 33 sec, closely followed by his brother Joe. The winner of the adults race was 14 year old local Finlay Wright in an incredible time of 11mins 12 secs easily outpacing his older rivals (and his mother). Jamie and Finlay received "silver" cups and all the category winners and runners-up got medals. Alderney Runners organised the event which was sponsored by the Rotary Club. Full details of the results and times can be seen at http://runalderney.org/racethetrain/results%202011.htm Junior Angling Competition Results: The Alderney Week Junior Fishing Competition was greeted with fine weather and proved a major hit with the young lads and lasses that took part with a record breaking 62 youngsters as young as 3 taking part. With fishing rods, reels and tackle up for grabs for the top three places in each age category competition was well……………just that, competitive! Plenty of Ballan Wrasse and Pollack played their part too with good catches of both species plus Corkwing Wrasse and several Garfish. The first hour was hectic especially towards the end of the chosen venue with Pollack and Gars falling to spinners and float fished fish strips and sandeel. Then an hour before high water and the Ballan Wrasse featured heavily with fish after fish being bought to the scales (to be weighed alive and returned), then the venue switched again for the last half hour and all three species were found in good numbers back at the other end. In between all this youngster Caleb Mackey was landing the fish of a lifetime (for now, he’s only 3!), a cracking 3lb 8oz Pollack which swept the board. I had the pleasure of seeing his distorted face landing the fine fish, on top of that Caleb had the furthest to travel…………….all the way from the island of Australia!! Sounds like fantasy but it wasn’t, it was fantastic!! Well done to all those that took part, to Gary, Jamie and Brian for helping out and of course the Mums and Dads that support this event every year. WINNERS:
