Alderney Week 2012 set to break the records at “The Games” ......and there’s more !
The city of London is preparing itself for a major upheaval to host next year’s Olympics, but with so many logistic and financial hurdles still to overcome, the little island of Alderney might just pip that big London event to the post with “The Games”.
Is the Alderney Week Team is trying to hijack London’s biggest ever event? Obviously, we have been watching preparations in London very closely and are learning from their financial and logistic mistakes. For a start, we feel two weeks is just too long for the Games. Eight days is just perfect – and so is our timing:
4 - 11 August 2012
The ticketing situation in London seems to be an absolute nightmare which is why we’ve decided virtually all of our events will be free or you just pay a small admission or donations at the gates. Clearly, we are much more experienced in organising large scale events than the London Olympics Committee and are happy for them to borrow our blue print.
Yes, we will have VIP traffic lanes but will not expect the bus and the train to operate exclusively for the VIPs and athletes and to ensure a smooth traffic flow we will dispense with traffic lights and zebra crossings. We are happy with the current security and crowd control arrangements and feel there is no need for us to call military back-up, though we have invited the 30 Signals to be there to shadow us.
The Games here in Alderney will have all the razzmatazz you can possibly imagine and the many different sporting events – some you may never have heard of and some that London is unable to host – will be putting London to shame.
“The Games” - our Alderney Week 2012 theme - offers great scope for float builders, costumes and events . Whatever the game, it's OK – go for it: from board games to sports - let your imagination run wild. We will be breaking so many records the famous Guinness Book will run out of paper!
The Opening Ceremony will be truly spectacular, and yes, we’ll have our very own Torch which will be carried from one event to event to the next by different children whose names will be drawn by raffle, culminating in the ultimate , and now world-famous, Alderney Torchlight Procession on Saturday night 11 August. London has every reason to be very concerned.
The programme of events will be published here as soon as we have finalised details. And if you have any ideas for a fun Olympics event, please e-mail info@alderneyweek.net or call 01481 824321 and keep visiting this page.
