ALDERNEY WEEK 2021 IS CANCELLED – THE SHOW CAN’T GO ON
“Alderney Adventures – The Show Must Go On” is the theme of this year’s Alderney Week. Sadly, just a week before the start of Alderney’s biggest annual festival a heart-breaking decision had to be made in view of the Island’s unexpected surge of Covid-19 infections and isolations.
With the current situation, Alderney Week team leader Ronnie Cairnduff and his team had to make the difficult and painful decision to cancel Alderney Week 2021. The Miss Alderney Disco and the Little Miss and Master Children’s party which was to take placed this Saturday 24 July, has also been cancelled.
This decision was not taken lightly and followed several discussions with the respective authorities. It was also a fact that a number of events organisers and volunteers took the decision to pull out of the programme. The current ‘isolation’ situation is and may continue to cause shortages of our many helpers and volunteers that are crucial to the Week.
An enormous amount of hard work, energy and considerable financial commitment had gone into producing a programme of over 70 events happening across the island during AW.
“We were aware of mounting public concern about the possible risk of further infections or isolations leading up to and possibly occurring during Alderney Week”, said Ronnie Cairnduff.
“With large numbers attending Cavalcade Day and other major events, it would be impossible to implement some of the measures now recommended to ensure social distancing and tracking. And there is no doubt, should any new cases be detected during Alderney Week, we, the organisers, would be made to feel in some way responsible.”
We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to our many sponsors, event organisers and individuals who have supported Alderney Week this year and we hope they understand our difficult decision.”
Some of the events planned by different event organisers and listed in the programme, will still go ahead. These events and updates will be publicised with posters at the Alderney Visitor Centre and across the island.
The Alderney Week programme is now on sale across different outlets on the island and we would ask all AW friends and supporters to buy a copy to help ensure that Alderney Week returns in 2022. ENDS
